Successful Fine Art Shipping in Houston Requires Knowledge

Successful Fine Art Shipping in Houston Requires Knowledge & Experience

When shipping fine art work you want to do research to find an experienced artwork shipper. Art collectors with no experience in packing artwork for shipping should consider that packages can be placed on conveyor belts, or tossed around during shipping.

Fine art collections are regularly transported to a variety of places for display outside a museum.  Fine art is also bought and sold between museums, collectors as well as other organizations. Individuals who own fine art, often ship pieces of art to family members or to auctions houses.  Quite often, fine art is shipped as part of an estate after the collector has passed away. Shipping fine art requires special skills and understanding to successfully transport it.

According to an article in the New York Times, “Fine art, like fine wine, is a tricky commodity to ship. While some of it may seem portable enough, there are many factors that make it a challenging travel companion…it is during transit that a work of art is most vulnerable…it's the single biggest problem, and mostly due to inadequate packing.”

Specialists

Packing and shipping fine art is something that can’t be handled like everyday household items.  An art handling company with fine art specialty will know the proper packing and moving techniques for fine art.  They will have the experience and knowledge to successfully move the artwork.  These movers will also be able to use their creative problem solving skills when required.

Customize

When shipping fine art, no one size box or container will accommodate all situations.  Experienced shippers will know what specialized paper to use for shipping prior to boxing or crating a piece of fine art.  Using proper packing materials will decrease any chance of damage.  Experienced companies know how to design crates and make them to meet the needs of everything from large pieces or paintings to sculptures and more.

Local or International

An experienced fine art shipper will be able to safely move items from one end of a city to the other, or to another country all together if necessary.  In addition to knowing the proper wrapping and packing, they will also know how to file the correct paperwork for international shipping.

Sounds of Shipping from Houston Shipping Co

Posted on Mon, Aug 05, 2013

I believe this is a mother and her calf.

While the shipping industry is flourishing world wide,  a grad student in Canada has confirmed what the was first discussed in 2008 at the Intercessional Meeting of the IMO Working Group on Greenhouse Gas Emissions.

Besides greenhouse gas emissions, oil pollution and carbon dioxide emission, sound produced by ships also has a negative effect on the environment and is considered a form of pollution.

Why you ask is a company that prepares goods for shipping interested in the environment?  From the beginning shipping companies like pack n send in Houston have joined in recycling efforts and are concerned about the environment.

We have watched as ships wait at ports until they are full to sail with their cargo.  Fewer ships sailing use less fuel and dispose of fewer waste products.  While it is not possible to sail with a full cargo load all of the time, the industry has gotten better about trying to fill ships completely with cargo before they sail.

The noise pollution aspect of shipping that Nathan Merchant mentions in his studies, is one of the often forgotten about sources of pollution in the shipping industry. The Handy  Shipping Guide article  goes into a full analysis of Mr. Merchant’s analysis.

When Mr. Merchant put equipment that records sound two km down on the sea floor, he explored noise pollution and how it affects dolphins whales, and other marine mammals. Since marine mammals communicate with the use of sound, there is an expectation that they now are changing their methods of communication.

Of course the sounds emanating from ships are not entirely attributable to cargo ships. Cruise ships and pleasure boats have also effect sound pollution.

While the effects of sound pollution are being studied, it looks as if it will be quite a few years down the road before satisfactory methods of controlling the sounds will be put into place.

Shipping Signs via Freight or Small Move-Ask Questions

Posted on Wed, May 16, 2012

When looking for a company that can pack and send your signs look for a company that can pack and deliver signs within your city, as well as  ship all over the world.

If you have a large quantity of signs, you may want to look a company that can handle small moves.

You will need to look for a company that can ship via boxes, crates, tubes or pallets. The company will need to ask you both the composition of the sign, as well as its value.  Some of the more common signs that are made today, are listed below.

Ask if the company has experience shipping the following types of signs.:

  • aluminum signs
  • coreplast signs
  • mdo-marine density board
  • foam core
  • steel signs
  • neon signs
  • magnetic signs
  • vinyl banners
  • antique wood signs

Have sign companies used the  shipping companies services before.  Be sure to ask for referrals.  Are individuals able to ship signs with this company.  Can the company you choose both pick up and delivery your signs? Can the company that you  are shipping with complete the international documentation needed for export?

Considering the value of custom made signs you should not look for a standard shipping service, but a shipping company that specializes in shipping high value items.

For more information about sign shipping, please feel free to contact pack n send at 713 266 1450.
