Moving Overseas Shipping Options

Posted on Tue, Mar 25, 2014

A move overseas requires thought and planning. Decisions need to be made about which household items you want to move overseas and how they will be moved.

Will your items be shipped by air or by boat?

Shipping your items by boat will take longer but is significantly less expensive. However, you should factor in the cost of renting furniture while you are waiting for yours to arrive as that may make the cost difference less substantial.

If you elect to transport by boat your household goods will be packed into seaworthy containers. They will then be transported via rail or truck to the port where they are loaded onto a boat. Once the containers have arrived in the destination country they will be unloaded and go through customs. Make sure to mark every box with the contents of the box. You will need to fill in international shipping documents.

We suggest having professionals pack your belongings and load your container. Remember, only the first two hours of loading are free.

If you do not have a significant amount of property you may want to consider sharing a container. Less than Container Load (LCL) shipment will reduce your costs. You can get quotes for shipping via the cubic meter.

Will you move your car?

Cars can be moved by boat or by air although shipping an auto by air is incredibly expensive. By boat the options are Full Container, Roll On Roll Off (RORO) RORO is a vessel designed to carry wheeled cargo and is basically a giant warehouse. No matter how the car is transported you will need to have certain documentation to move your car:
• Original Title
• Bill of Sale
• EIN Number
• Export documents
• Inbound Customs Clearance - The Bureau of Consular Affairs or another comparable governmental agency will have the specific policies of the country you are moving to.

Keep in mind the level of gas should be less than 1/8 of a tank before departure. In addition you can consider shipping your motorcycle, boat, or RV. The same documentation will apply.

You will want to value your property during shipment to protect yourself against damage or loss.
The details of overseas shipping can be overwhelming. It is wise to seek assistance and guidance from shipping professionals. Contact us to learn how we can help you with your overseas move.

Houston Shipping Company and International Shipping

Posted on Thu, Mar 21, 2013

International shipping poses many questions and demands a lot of research before a company ships and item for you. Remember that shipping charges are based on dimensions (length, width, and height, value of the item that you are shipping, as well as the weight of the items that you are sending.

While it may appear time-consuming to gather the information listed above, you need to take into consideration many items when preparing an international shipment.

We have listed a few basic questions to ask when arranging an international shipment.

Will the country you are shipping to accept the item you are attempting to ship?
Every country has a list of items that they will not accept. Use the UPS Country Regulations tool if you are unsure about the items you're shipping. While France will not accept pancake mix, and Mexico has extra charges for items manufactured in China, there are some countries that will not accept fresh fruit. It is recommended that you check ahead of time to make sure that the items you would like to ship will be accepted in the country that you are shipping to. If you are shipping international freight you will want to look at ocean versus air shipping.

When looking for shipping company that will ask if the company that you are using can send both small amounts of goods as well as large shipping containers?
If you choose a company that offers the full range of services, they should look for the least expensive way to ship all of your items. While smaller shipments may go via air, larger shipments may go via ocean. As an example fo rinternational freight shipping, it makes sense to send a picture via air to England.  As for large pieces of medical equipment to the same country, ocean shipping should be investigated.

Does the shipping company you are considering using have experience shipping to Africa, as well as South America?
With different cultures and shipping requirements, it is worth looking for and experienced company.  Italy, for example, has different restrictions from the United Arab Emirates.

Look for a   company that is willing to spend the time to price each of your shipments individually this way you can analyze the best alternative for each shipment?
Fuel surcharges are constantly changing, and certain days of the week often offer less expensive shipping charges than other days.
