Summer Moving Tips from Houston Mover

Posted on Tue, Apr 23, 2013

As a Houston Mover, we are getting calls about spring time moving. While parts of the country are ending winter, the summer move season is upon us. Whether you are moving within the city, out of state or are shipping via international freight, we are going to share a few moving tips.

If you don’t use an item or don’t need the item-donate it or give it away. Do not move an unneeded item. If you have not used an item during the past year, do not move it.

Make a list of the items you will need the 1st few days after your move. Make a list of the items you want to take with you.  Moving time is a good time to donate unused items. Ask for a donation receipt.

Start to plan your move at least 6 weeks ahead of time.

Decide ahead of time if you will need to rent a storage unit. Empty out your storage unit at the time of your move.

Separate out the items that you want taken to a storage unit.  Now is a good time to empty out your storage unit.

There may be items that you don't use or need anymore. Maybe you do not have enough space in your new residence, or you are moving to a temporary residence.  If you cannot empty out your storage unit, you may want to take the items that you cannot put in your new residence to the storage unit.

Make a list before you move of the items that you want to put into storage and the items that you want to retrieve from storage. Moving is the best time to sort out needed and unneeded items. List the items you are going to move. This helps plan out the moving supplies that you will need to have on hand.

Have a tape measure or ruler handy to pre measure items you are moving. Measure items before you purchase your moving boxes. Identify which items will need special packing materials for the move. Examples are lamps and china. Measure your delicate and fragile items. Take these measurements with you when you go shopping for packing supplies.

Look for free or inexpensive moving boxes. Check out your grocery store or locally owned shipping store. If you ask a grocery store manager to save boxes for you, find out the day when the most boxes are received. Free grocery store boxes tend to be large.  Only pack the amount you can easily move from room to room.

When packing dishes, use blank newsprint paper.  Don’t use old newspapers. The print can come off on your valuable items. When packing your plates, stand your plates on their edge as opposed to laying them flat.

Need your papers moved in an orderly fashion? Place your documents in file boxes. Organize your moving scissors, tape, box cutter and markers all in one container. Move it with you from room to room as you pack.

Moving clothes from your closet? Purchase wardrobe boxes. This way you can hang your clothes during your move. Wardrobe boxes let you hang your clothes during your move.

Prepackaged moving and packing kits are usually more expensive than purchasing boxes and materials separately. When buying supplies for moving, remember to buy a roll of bubble wrap for fragile items. You may need to purchase double wall boxes for your heavier items. Purchase a tape gun. Ask the clerk to show you how to use it. It will save you time when you tape up your boxes.  Place packing peanuts as a cushion around your delicate items.

While the moving tips listed above can be used for interstate and intrastate move, some of these tips also apply to international freight shipping both from Houston and the rest of the country.

Sending College Transcripts Overseas-Houston Shipping Co Advice

Posted on Mon, Apr 22, 2013

As the end of the semester closes we are seeing an increase in the number of transcripts that we are shipping internationally. Make sure that the student has an official transcript from the University or school that they are attending.  For loan and grant purposes, a copy taken off of the internet is usually not sufficient.

When students are sending transcripts countries outside of the United States of America, there is certain information that they will need to have the transcripts delivered. An individuals or companies name. A complete street address, along with the city and zip code. A phone number or email address for the recipient.

We suggest that the student keep a copy of the transcript that they are sending.  The student should also ask for the tracking number for their transcript shipment. That way, they can make sure that the package has been delivered.  If for some reason the package is misplaced on the recipients end, your student still has proof of shipping as well as delivery.

Students should not wait until the last possible day to ship their transcripts.  Due to delays in customs, delays due to weather conditions and public holidays in other countries, last minute shipping of transcripts is not advised.

Try to bring the transcripts in to the business that is handling the transcript shipping at least two hours before the business closes. This way the business can make sure that the transcript is picked up that day for shipping.

As your student moves back overseas when their schooling is complete, we can offer a few international shipping tips.

Only pack the clothing that you intend to use when you return home.  If you live in a warm country, the down jacket that you have purchased for your four years in the United States may not be used again. There are always consignment resale shops or places that are happy to take donations of warm winter clothing.

Do not plan on shipping perfume, cologne or anything in pressurized cans. Such items as deodorant and hairspray should be left in the United States.  Make a list of everything that you are packing to ship overseas. Put the value of each items next to the item on the list.  You will need to prepare a commercial invoice, or have on prepared for you.  At any rate, you will need this list in order to have your package leave the United States.  Since packages go through customs, you do want to make sure that you have everything listed properly.

The charges for the international shipping will be based on both the weight and value of the packages you are shipping as well as on the dimensions of the packages.  Dimensions are length, width and height of your packages.  Every inch both larger or smaller can make a difference in the prices that your student will pay.  Ask your student to ship everything at one time if possible. A professional packing company should be able to combine packages and save you money.  Paying for empty space is not advisable in international shipping.

If your college student is considering shipping back the automobile that he or she purchased in the United States, please look into various options. If possible, consider using Ro-Ro.  This is roll on and roll off the ship.  As an alternative method of shipping you may want to ship the vehicle inside of a container. The method you choose may depend on the value of the vehicle and the port to which you are shipping the vehicle.

Allow extra time for the car to  arrive, as you will need to arrange for space on the ship, and plan around boat sailing dates.  Once again, you will be dealing with customs in both the United States and also the country that you are shipping the vehicle to.

This article comes to you from an international freight shipping company in Houston Texas.  If you are looking for freight companies in Houston Texas or in other cities, please feel free to contact us and we will help you direct you when shipping for your college student.  International freight shipping in Houston is easy, since we are near a port. It may take you a little more time to arrange international freight shipping in other cities.

International Freight Shipping Firm in Houston Texas Offers Advice

Posted on Fri, Apr 19, 2013

As our customers ask questions about international shipping we will continue to answer these questions on a regular basis.

First and foremost plan ahead. The ground shipping that you are  accustomed to use for shipping within the United States does not exist for international shipping. There are documents to consider as well as shipping restrictions.

Think about distance, customs, oceans and foreign governments. You want to be able to plan that your package can arrive at the correct destination at the correct time.  Customs both in the United States as well as customs in foreign countries can delay the delivery of a shipment.

Plan on having your shipment packaged professionally. Have a Commercial Invoice prepared professionally if you do not have someone on your staff who can handle this paperwork for you.  Allow time for holidays that may occur in the country that you are shipping to. Also plan for weather delays, or equipment delays.

Consider the shipping laws in both the country that you are shipping from as well as the country that you are shipping to. There are laws as to what can be shipped both from and to various countries. The shipping service that you choose to use does not make these laws. It is the national governments that make these laws.  As an example, jewelry may be prohibited from shipping to one country while another country welcomes all jewelry.

Documentation will need to be prepared for international packages as well as international freight shipping, Houston company notes. This goes for international freight shipping as well as international shipping of small packages. Freight companies in Houston, Texas as well as freight companies throughout the United States can offer advice.

When you have an item that is valued at greater than $2500 you will need to fill in a shipper’s export declaration that is used for international shipping. This form is regulated by the U S Census Bureau. If you have many small value items that total $2500, then you do not need this form.  This form is only necessary for one single item that is valued greater than $2500.

You will need to prepare a Commercial Invoice when shipping anything but documents out of the United States.  This Commercial Invoice will list all of the items that you are shipping internationally.  You will need to put a price of the items that you are shipping. If the country levies duties and taxes on your shipment, these fees will be based on the value of the items that you are shipping.

When shipping internationally you should consider taking out valuation coverage in case of loss or damage for the items that you are shipping. Always keep your tracking number. This way, not only can you track your shipments progress on line, you will know when your package is delivered. If for any reason your shipment is delayed you will be able to call or email and answer any questions in a timely and quick manor.

As our customers ask questions about international shipping we will continue to answer these questions on a regular basis.

Updates for International Freight Shipping From Houston Texas Firm

Posted on Thu, Apr 18, 2013

International freight shipping poses many questions and demands a lot of research before you choose a company to ship items for you. Remember that shipping charges are based on dimensions (length, width, and height), and the value of the item that you are shipping, as well as the weight of the items that you are sending.

While it may appear time-consuming to gather the information listed above, you need to take these items into consideration many items when preparing an international shipment.

We have listed a few basic questions to ask when arranging an international shipment.

Will the country you are shipping to accept the item you are attempting to ship?

Every country has a list of items that they will not accept. . While France will not accept pancake mix, and Mexico has extra charges for items manufactured in China, there are some countries that will not accept fresh fruit. It is recommended that you check ahead of time to make sure that the items you would like to ship will be accepted in the country that you are shipping to. If you are shipping international freight you will want to look at ocean versus air shipping.

International freight shipping Houston Texas  company offers advice:

When looking for shipping company that will ask if the company that you are using can send both small amounts of goods as well as large shipping containers?

If you choose a company that offers the full range of services, they should look for the least expensive way to ship all of your items. While smaller shipments may go via air, larger shipments may go via ocean. As an example with international freight shipping, it makes sense to send a picture via air to England. As for large pieces of medical equipment to the same country, ocean shipping should be investigated.

Does the shipping company you are considering using have experience shipping to Africa, as well as South America?

With different cultures and shipping requirements, it is worth looking for and experienced company. Italy, for example, has different restrictions from the United Arab Emirates.

Look for a company that is willing to spend the time to price each of your shipments individually this way you can analyze the best alternative for each shipment?
Fuel surcharges are constantly changing, and certain days of the week often offer less expensive shipping charges than other days.

When looking for freight companies  Houston Texas or anywhere in the United States, be sure to address the issues discussed above.
