Steps to Take before Shipping Antiques

Posted on Thu, Oct 10, 2013

Whether you’re moving across town or across the country, packing up antique or heirloom pieces is something you may be stressing over. These items may be  irreplaceable, but they  can safely arrive to your destination when let a professional packing and shipping company  take care of shipping antiques for you.

Use a company that has access to all the supplies that are needed for shipping valuable pieces. For larger pieces of furniture, consider using moving blankets for covering furniture.

For smaller items you can use bubble wrap, packing peanuts, and shrink wrap in order to protect your valuable items.  Each and every antique will need to be looked at to determine the safest way to pack and ship it.

If you are shipping an antique out of town, you may need to determine if the antique will need to have a custom crate built for protection. For smaller less delicate items, double boxing an
antique may be the way to go.

Sometimes a custom built pallet can be built and you can ship your antique via freight.  Freighting furniture is often a money saving alternative. The antique furniture can ship via freight and be delivered either with the curbside delivery option, or with inside delivery.

Always look at the size and construction of the item that you want to ship. Bubble wrap is usually used for, mirrors, lamps and other accessories. Double boxing works for china. Depending on the porcelain, pottery or artwork a custom crate may be the best answer.

Look for a company that has crating items down to a fine science. For custom built crates, the company that you choose will need   to determine the size of crate that’s needed. They
will also need to determine if any blocking and bracing is needed  as well as the type of material that should be placed inside the crate for protection. One inch Styrofoam is standard, but often times bubble and or peanuts will need to be added for extra protection. Consider when you pack an antique chandelier for shipping purposes.

If you are considering shipping antiques outside of the United States, look for a company that has experience in international shipping.  Specific wood will need to be used for both crates and pallet shipping.

Since moving antiques is not a one size fits all situation, please feel free to contact us at pack n send in Houston TX with any questions that you may have about packing and sending

Antique Shipping Made Easy

Posted on Tue, Apr 30, 2013

This article will discuss questions that you should ask before shipping an antique.

Shipping antiques requires a company that is both a professional packing and delivery company. Ask for a customized service that will fit your specific needs. It may be a certain pick up time, a certain delivery time or shipping internationally to family members. Heirloom furniture deserves special treatment.  Memories make a piece of furniture more than something sleep on, sit on or eat on.

You will need to look for a company that handles custom packing, custom box making, custom palletizing or even custom crating. Custom packing may require both lining the crate with Styrofoam, as well as blocking and bracing of your antique. The reason that you look at all of these options, is that each and every antique shipment is different.  For high value items a custom built crate may be needed, while for other shipments, a double wall box may be exactly what is needed for shipping.

Certain times you will ship for an estate or to multiple family members when breaking up a home.  Sometimes it is for estate   shipping and sometimes loving parents are shipping to their children.

When shipping within the United States, you may want to look at a company that can blanket wrap your antiques and deliver them on a moving truck.  Ask if the company has minimum charges. Look for a company that will charge based on distance and the amount of space that your shipment will take up on truck.

International shipping of antiques requires the same pick up service, but different packing specifications. If a custom crate is to be built, or if the company needs to use a custom pallet, then make sure that wood required for international shipping is used. Customs documentation will need to be prepared. Make sure that the company that you are shipping to will accept the type of antique that you are shipping. Commercial invoices will need to be prepared. If one of the antiques you are shipping is valued for more than $2500, a Schedule B number will be required. Check with the country that you are shipping to about duties and taxes that will need to be paid. Do you want to pay the duties and taxes, or will you leave it up to the recipient to pay these taxes?

In order to determine the value to place on either your domestic or international antique shipment, you may need to obtain an appraisal.  In the case of a deceased relative, the estate may require this appraisal in order to settle the estate. Let the company that you choose to ship your antique know that you would like to take out valuation coverage.  They should cover value for both loss and damage if they pack your antique for you. If you pack your antique, they will probable offer coverage for loss only.  This makes perfect sense since you are not a professional packer.  A company will not know the type of job that you have done packing your antique.

If your antique is small and if you pack it in a box, the top of the box should not move when you press down on the top of the box. We recommend pushing down peanuts if you are using a box, to make sure that your antique does not move around during shipping.

If you are having a difficult finding an antique shipper in your city, you may want to look up companies that concentrate in shipping the following items:  high value art work, marble, marble statutes, grandfather clocks, taxidermy animals, crystal and chandeliers. Why do we suggest items?  These items are inherently fragile.  If a company does not list antiques on their website, but does list all of these delicate and valuable items, they can probably also ship antiques.

Shipping Antiques? Shipping Company in Houston has Advice

Posted on Thu, Feb 14, 2013

Antique shipping and moving is a very specialized service. When you want to move just a small amount of antique furniture, you can have it custom boxed or crated and then freighted.

Some pieces of antique furniture can go on a pallet, surrounding the furniture with protection and stretch wrap, and shipping the furniture via truck to its new city.

Some pieces will need to be custom crated. The crate will need to be built specifically to fit your antique.

The crating company should have years of experience both handling and valuing antiques. Remember: every crate will need to be built to specifically fit your individual item.

If you have many pieces of antique furniture you may use a special mover that specializes in moving antiques.

Make sure they know how to properly pack and prepare the furniture for your move. Some of it may be blanket wrapped, some of it may be wrapped in flexible cardboard and some may need to be crated for the move.

You will want to make sure that you have a current appraisal before valuing the antique for shipping.

If you are shipping antique sculptures or art work, look for a firm that specializes in packing and crating high value items from one city to another.

Finding a company that can offer varied services when shipping antiques will help save you money. You want to make sure that your antiques arrive in pristine condition.

If you are shipping an antique internationally, you need to look for a company that has experience. While various countries have specific requirements for antiques, any piece valued at greater than $2500 will need a Schedule B number.

We have listed below countries that we ship to in general. If you have any questions about shipping antiques, or worldwide shipping please feel free to contact us at 713 266 1450.
