Planning Your International Move

Posted on Wed, Dec 12, 2018

If you are planning to move out of the country, (or if you are planning to return to the country), there are many factors to keep in mind when mapping out the logistics of your relocation. For example, when it comes to international shipping, what are some important arrangements to make in order to make your move as smooth as possible?

 colorful-shipping-containers-in-a-container-lot

  • Perhaps the first, and most important step is simply this: determine what you absolutely need to take with you, and what you can afford to leave behind in storage, give away, or get rid of. This can help you to save a lot of money in the long run.
  • Make sure you provide a detailed packing list for each crate that will be exported and received during your relocation. The packing list should include a description of every item in the crate, along with each item's weight and measurements. This is essential for insurance purposes if any loss or damage occurs during transit.
  • Along with the above point, make sure that you have performed a valuation of each item you are shipping.
  • Make sure that you are using the right containers for your items. International shipments are often measured in cubic meters. For example, a cubical 20 ft shipping container can hold about 28 cubic meters, whereas a 40 ft container can hold 64. You don't want to pay more than you have to, so don't use bigger containers than are needed.
  • Remember that air shipping is usually faster, but more expensive; ocean shipping is the opposite. It takes longer, but is usually more cost-effective. This can determine which method of shipping you decide to use for your items.
  • Research which items may be prohibited by the country you are relocating to. For example, France prohibits the import of alcoholic beverages; England prohibits animal hair and wool; and Belize prohibits political literature of any kind.

There are many factors to keep in mind in your relocation. A relocation specialist can offer much assistance, and make the process easier for you. At Pack n Send, we can help you plan out the logistics of an overseas move. Contact us today for more information.

How Much Does It Cost to Ship Internationally?

How Much Does It Cost to Ship Internationally?

international shipping via plane, freight, and truck

If you are new to international shipping, you might be a little nervous or preparing yourself for sticker shock when it comes to shipping costs. The truth is, there are a lot of factors that go into the price of shipping internationally! In this post we break down some of those factors so you can have a better idea of how much your shipment will cost before you go to send it.

What Determines International Shipping Costs?

Size of the Package:

International shipping can be completed for just about any size package or freight. If you are shipping a small package overseas, chances are you would choose air shipment because it is much quicker. It is, however, more expensive than ocean shipping. But ocean shipping can allow for a much larger shipment. Items can be crated or palletized, packed into a shipping container, and then sent overseas via the ocean.

Weight of the Package:

Similar to the discussion about size, weight is also a determining factor. Ocean shipping can take on more weight than air shipping generally. For example, cars, heavy equipment, and medical equipment are better to ship via ocean.

Timeline of the Shipment:

If you need something delivered quickly, air shipping is the way to go! However, as noted before, it is going to be more expensive. If you can plan ahead, you can save money with sea shipping. For example, if your business exports goods to foreign countries, your shipments that come via sea might take weeks to arrive to their final destination.

Destination:

As you would probably expect, it is generally more expensive to ship to countries that are farther away and that have limited access. Shipping companies like Pack n Send can provide you with a customized quote for your package. And make sure to look into any shipping restrictions for the country you are sending too as well.

The International Shipping Scene in Brazil

The International Shipping Scene in Brazil

Christ the Redeemer in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil

The Brazilian Economy

The Brazilian economy is rated among the top ten economies in the world by nominal Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This economy is characterized by a great reliance on import substitution, which has ensured a rapid growth in the economy. This effort has led to Brazil being rated as one of the countries with the highest level of importation with reference to its GDP.

International Shipping: Brazilian Imports

One of many of the products imported by Brazil is auto parts. Their main supplier is Mexico, with whom they have fixed quotas for exchange so as to ensure fair competition with those auto parts produced locally. Another large import in Brazil is electronic gadgets and components. Due to Brazil's heavy reliance on the importation of this commodity, this sector has short-term industrial policies which have been coherent with the policies used in telecommunications and information technology. Transmission and reception parts are also imported. These include telephone units and equipment used to receive and transmit images, voice, and any other forms of data. Communication parts which use digital techniques are also imported.

Tourist Attractions in Brazil

Apart from business, Brazil also forms a big hub for tourists with a variety of tourist attraction sites that appeal to international travelers and local tourists alike. From being home to some of the world's largest football teams to having tropical beaches along the Atlantic Ocean, the Amazon rainforest, and the Pantanal wetlands, the sites for tour visits are endless.

Container Transport and Ocean Freight in Brazil

This country also offers unbeatable rates for container transport and ocean freight. It has 18 ports from the United States and 16 ports from Spain. From being an economic hub with major opportunities for investors to being an outstanding world wise tourist attraction, Brazilian business continues to grow, and so does the number of people who choose to invest in it!

International Freight Tips: Shipping From Houston to Kuwait

International Freight Tips: Shipping From Houston to Kuwait

international-freight-shipping-kuwait

You may already have some idea of the restrictions you generally run into with international shipping, but it's always good to get a reminder! Shipping to Kuwait is a particularly specific process, but one that is relatively direct if approached with the right know-how.

Here is some notable general information as well as selected key tips for handling international freight shipping from Houston, Texas to Kuwait:

Familiarize Yourself With Shipping Restrictions

As we'll address momentarily, Houston freight shipping to Kuwait requires applying for one or more import licenses. But before you start that process, it's worth knowing whether or not you'll even be able to ship your goods to Kuwait!

Here are some prohibited goods particularly notable for Houston freight shipping, as outlined by the U.S. government's updated resource on Kuwait:

  • Any pork products.
  • Pornographic materials, subject to a high standard (no art or otherwise non-sexualized nudity is allowed).
  • Alcoholic beverages.

***Special Note: Different Kuwaiti ministries handle restrictions for different restricted items. When you apply for your general import license, get specific about your goods and ask if a secondary license is required.***

Apply For Permits Before Shipping

Despite the restrictions above, many items that can't be shipped internationally to many locations are actually eligible for importation into Kuwait as long as you apply for the proper licenses beforehand!

All imports first require a general import license. This lasts for a year, covers multiple shipments, and is renewable.

Separate licenses are required for (but not limited to) the following items, selected as potentially relevant for international freight shipping from Houston, Texas:

  • Industrial machinery, including spare parts.
  • Pharmaceuticals.
  • Animals.

Finalizing Your Houston Freight Shipping Plan

Finally, you items must be packed properly to handle the rigors of international shipping. Even the best Houston freight shipping firm still has to subject your goods to customs -- essentially, into third party hands -- so you'll want to use heavy-duty packing techniques that protect your shipped items from unforeseen circumstances.

For Houston freight shipping, using a reliable, experienced local shipping company to handle your goods straight from the packing stage is ideal. Don't leave it up to chance; get a professional involved from the first step!

Ensure Your Item is Shipped Quickly and Safely With Pack n Send!

To learn the exact details on having your goods examined, professionally packed, and shipped to Kuwait with minimal risk, contact us at Pack n Send. We're the best shipping company in Houston, and we personally guarantee that your package will arrive safe and sound no matter where you're looking to send it!
